About this course
In this course, we introduce the highly synoptic Year 13 topic of competition policy. We explore, in detail, the essential prerequisite background knowledge - theoretical and contextual - and navigate the A level content with a strong emphasis on precise use of language and terminology, application of theory to context, and high-level evaluation.
In particular, we consider the background topics of market failure, government failure, market structures and contestability, and supply side policies, with a foundation of solid welfare analysis diagrams. We then overlay these with a competition policy focus including the pros and cons of competition itself, market liberalisation policies (eg privatisation, contracting out and competitive tendering, and deregulation), and market control policies (eg price/profit capping, regulation, and separation of natural monopoly firms). Topics are explored via a combination of theory and examples, and broader macroeconomic connections are made with areas such as economic development and macroeconomic performance for a truly synoptic approach.
You'll also find nearly 40 teaching and learning resources to download and support your teaching.
